2. Inaugural Address
　　January 20, 1961
    John Fitzgerald Kennedy

　ケネディは1961年1月20日に米国35代の大統領に就任した。当日行われた

就任演説は簡潔な表現と格調の高さにおいて、リンカーン、ウィルソン、ルー

ズベルト等の就任演説に匹敵する歴史的名演説といわれている。
　演説であるから、言葉が耳に入って来るその順番にそのままに意味をとらえ
られるのが望ましい。ここでは文字を見ながら声なき声を聞き、文頭からできる
だけ返り読みをしないで、順送りに上流から下流へと、左から右へと英文の流
れるままに意味をとらえていくようにしたい。
 以下にケネディによる理想にむけての名言・提言を記してみる：

�@ If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it can
not save the few who are rich.
　自由を標榜する国家社会が多数派である貧しきひとびとに手をさしのべられな
いというのであれば、その国家社会は少数派である富めるひとびとを危害や危険な
どから守りその安全を保持することなどできないのであります。

�A To that world assembly of sovereign states, the United Nations,
our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far
outpaced the instruments of peace, we renew our pledge of
support―to prevent it from becoming merely a forum for
invective―to
strengthen its shield of the new and the weak―and to enlarge the
area in which
its writ may run.
　世界中の主権国家が所定の目的のために集まっている国連は、戦争手段が平
和手段をはるかに凌駕しているこの時代に、最後に残された最高最善の希望の光
です。この国連に対してアメリカはつぎのようなことに力を尽くすことを改めて誓いま
す。国連が単なる非難応酬の場にならないようにし、国連が新興諸国や弱小諸国
の後ろ盾として強化されるようにし、国連の憲章が行き渡る領域を拡大するように
力を尽くします。

�B Let both sides, for the first time, formulate serious and
precise proposals for the inspection and control of arms―and
bring the
absolute power to destroy other nations under the absolute control
of all
nations.
　双方とも初の本格的な詳細にわたる提案・計画をまとめあげて軍備の査察と統
制を実行してゆこうではありませんか。さらに、双方が保有する他国破壊の決定的
な軍事力（核兵器）を、すべての国による完璧な統制のもとに置こうではありません
か。

�C And if a beach-head of cooperation may push back the jungle of
suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor, not a
new balance of power, but a new world of law, where the strong are
just and the weak secure and the peace preserved.
　いま申しあげましたことにさらに追加して申し上げます。協力というものを足がか
りとして複雑にもつれた疑心暗鬼の念を取り払うことは可能です。そうとなれば、双
方ともさらに力を合わせていままでになかった新たな企てに取り組もうではありませ
んか。それは、勢力の新たな均衡を図ること、ではありません。そうではなくて、新た
な世界としての法治世界を築くこと、であります。これができれば、強大国は正義を
守り、弱小国には安全が保障され、平和が維持されていくことになります。




�D Now the trumpet summons us again―not as a call to bear arms,
though arms we need―not as a call to battle, though embattled we
are―but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle,
year in and year out, “rejoicing in hope, patient in
 tribulation”―a
struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty,
disease and
war itself.
　さて今やまたも召集のラッパが鳴り響きます。しかし、それは、武器を取れ、という
合図ではありません。もっとも武器はいまも必要ではありますが。また戦いに臨め、
という合図でもありません。もっともいまも問題山積・多難な状況のなかで戦争のよ
うな状態にありますが。召集のラッパはこれからの多難な辛苦に耐えよ、との合図で
あります。それは長期にわたる薄明かりでの先がよく見えない中での自由や諸権利
を模索してゆく難事業であります。行く年、来る年を幾重にも経てゆく難事業です。
「喜びとするところは希望の光にあり、そのためにこそ耐えて苦難に臨む」難事業で
す。この難事業における人類共通の敵は何か。それは圧制であり、貧困であり、病
苦であり、そしてまさに戦争そのものこそが人類の敵なのであります。

�E Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance,
North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful
life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?
　こういう敵に対抗してすぐれた成果をあげるような世界規模の同盟関係を、幾多
の難題はあるでしょうがそれをのり超えてその永続性・強靭性を期して創りあげてゆ
こうではありませんか。これは、世界の南北、東西にわたる同盟です。これができれ
ば、人類すべてのひとびとの生活は必ずやいまよりももっと実り豊かなものになるの
です。将来を展望するとききっと重要になるこの組織的な継続事業にぜひなんとし
ても参加していただきたいのであります。

�F And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do
for you―ask what you can do for your country.
　こういうわけですから、国民の皆さん、アメリカという国家が皆さんのためにいった
いどんなことをしてくれるというのだろうか、とは、どうか問わないでいただきたいので
す。そうではなくて、問うて戴きたいのは、皆さんの側からみて皆さんこそがアメリカ
という国家にどんなことができるのだろうか、と言うことであります。

�G My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do
for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
　心をともにする世界各国の同志の皆様に申し上げます。アメリカが皆様のために
どんなことをしてくれるのだろうか、とは、どうか問わないでいただきたいのです。そう
ではなくて、共に手を携えて人類の自由のためにいったいどんなことができるのだ
ろうか、と問うていただきたいのであります。

�H Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the
world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and
sacrifice
which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward,
with
history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the
land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that
here on
earth God’s work must truly be our own.
　最後に、アメリカ国民の皆さんにも、世界各国の国民の皆様にもお願いいたし
ます。政権を担う私たちに高い水準の奮闘心と犠牲的行為を求めてください。

それと全く同じ奮闘心と犠牲的な行為を皆様にもお願いをいたします。道義のこ
ころこそが確かに戴けるただひとつだけの報償であると考えて、さらにまた、歴史
こそがこれからの諸行為・行動に対する最終的な審判者になってくれるのだと考
えて、祖国愛に燃えて前進してゆこうではありませんか。どうぞ、天の創造主よ、
ご祝福くださり、ご加護を賜りますように。ただし、私たちは次のことを承知してい
ます。この地上では天の創造主の御こころを具現化させていくのは間違いなく私

Greg Irwinさんの英訳で、
「可愛。可愛」と啼いているのは（原詩では）
お母さんからす な わけですから、
下記のようにしたほうがいいのでは、と思いました：

"Caw" she cried

As baby crows were in her nest
"Caw" she cried
"Caw" she cried
"Tell me when can you fly?"

カラスは英語では
Kah, ではなくて、
Caw, ってなくんですね。
カーではなくてコウにちかい響きなんでしょうか。

原詞の日本語を、
アーウィンさんは、英訳されたとき、
直訳ではなくて、
意訳されたのでしょうか。
子ガラスが七匹そろって
カーカーなきながら
母親カラスが運んでくる「えさ」を
求める、といった光景を
目に浮かべられてこれを描写されたのでしょうか。

それにしても英訳詞では
父親カラスはどこにいってしまったのでしょう。
わたしの感じでは、
この元歌の日本語歌詞には
父親カラスの存在も感じられるのですが。
