Encounters

Life is a series of encounters,
　tied together by curious chance.

The doctrine of transmigration of souls

　is of miraculous wonder.

The chance encounter has completely changed my life:

「蛇の目」についてはその説明を放棄している。

こういう擬音語のところの英訳は、
英語母語者の独擅場のようにおもわれる。

擬音語・擬態語に関しては
第一級の辞書であると言われる
小学館の
Progressive Japanese-English Dictionary, Third Editionを
参照してみると、
「ぴっち　ぴっち　ちゃぷ　ちゃぷ」という項目は採用されていない。

しかし、「ぴちぴち」、「ちゃぽちゃぽ」「チャポン」という項目は採用されて
いて、次のような説明がほどこされている。
「ぴちぴち」：[勢いよく跳ねる様子] 池の鯉がぴちぴち跳ねている The
carp in the pond are splashing. 「ちゃぽちゃぽ」ちゃぽちゃぽと水たまり
を歩くsplash [slosh] through a puddle.
「チャポン」[水がはねる音]
splash, slosh.―英語表現では水のはねる音にはs, l, p などの音感が取り込
まれるようである。splashからsplashy, splishyなどを派生させる表現法
は、英語母語者ではないふつうの英語学習者には
できない芸当かもしれない。

（Irwinは、ここで、「らんらんらん」をHappy am I.と訳出している。
「うまいなあ」と感じ入る。）

Irwin訳は意訳になっている：「かばんを背中にしょって、
母さんのもってきてくれた傘をさして、
母さんのあとについて歩いてゆこう」という
原詞の内容を省除して、

「母さんが来てくれた、
母さんはこれから
自分のよこに
つきそってくれて
家のほうにむかって
くれるのだ」

という主旨の英訳にしている。

Irwinはさらにここでも意訳をしている：

僕は母さんの大きな傘に入って行きますよ」
という原詞の意図が、
英文の方では三人とも
「ひとつの大きな傘」に入って歩いていく
といった感じの英文になっていて、
日本語と英語表現の間に意味のずれが生じている。

「蛇の目」の英訳は放棄されている。
「蛇の目傘」は文化のひとつかもしれない。
簡単には英語になってくれない日本語のうちの一つかもしれない。

●　あとがき　Postscript

「仕事中心から地域貢献へ」

９月８日の東京新聞夕刊によれば、厚労白書
２００６年度版は、社会保障の穴埋めを期待して
家族や地域による支え合いを活性化させる
との社会の将来像を提起しているそうです。

高齢社会のひとびとは、いつまでも
昔の職場の仲間や同窓会の仲間に
すがりついているだけでは、どうやら、
生きてゆけなくなりそうです。

西岡富士夫大兄さんは
８０歳を超えてすこぶるお元気。
横浜磯子地区における自治会長を７年にわたり務められて
地域にすっかりとけこまれ、地域の連帯にお力を
つくされています。毎日の平均歩数は
１３０００歩。歩け歩けを実践され、
なんでもおいしくめしあがられます。

いただいた「健康長寿の１０か条」

１．血清アルブミン値が高い。
２．血清総コレステロール値は高すぎず、低すぎず
３．足が丈夫である
４．主観的健康感がよい
５．短期の記憶力がよい
６．太り方は中くらい

西岡さんは、とりわけ、
１０番目を重視されます。
職場時代の社友会や交友会などに
でかけるのは
むしろもう少なくして
その時間を
地域社会への参画のための
時間としなさい、と
薦められます。

西岡さんにおひさしぶりにお会いし、
おいしいイタリア料理をご馳走いただいて、
お話をたっぷりお聞かせいただいて、
行動範囲の軌道修正を図らねば、
と思ったことでした。

坂井さん　　今晩は。
先日の湘南通信に平川唯一先生の番組のことが触れてありましたが、
面白いエピソードをご紹介します。
当時NHKに苦情の葉書が来て
「あの講師は番組の終わりに"なんてつまらない”といつも言っていて、
失礼でけしからん」と言うので
係が調べたら
"Until tomorrow night."だったのです。
そういえば初心者には
「ナンテツマラナイ」
に聞こえるかもしれませんね。
