無限の愛をそそいでゆこう
一羽の鳥の声にも
無心の耳を
かたむけてゆこう
二度とない人生だから
一匹のこおろぎでも
ふみころさないように
こころしてゆこう
どんなにか
よろこぶことだろう
二度とない人生だから
一ぺんでも多く
便りをしよう
返事は必ず
書くことにしよう
二度とない人生だから
まず一番身近な者たちに
できるだけのことをしよう
貧しいけれど
こころ豊かに接してゆこう
二度とない人生だから
つゆくさのつゆにも
めぐりあいのふしぎを思い
足をとどめてゆこう
二度とない人生だから
のぼる日しずむ日
まるい月かけてゆく月
四季それぞれの
星々にふれて
わがこころを

戦争のない世の
実現に努力し
そういう詩を
一篇でも多く

Since We Do Not Live Here In This World Twice
Since we do not live here in this world twice,
let's pour a vast amount of affection,
even upon a single lonely flower;
let's carefully listen to a bird chirping and twittering,
with ourselves removed.
Since we do not live here in this world twice,
let's take a careful step
so as not to tread
even a cricket down to death.
How grateful to you it is for your considerate care-taking!
Since we do not live here in this world twice,
let's write a letter to anyone just once more,
in addition to the many letters you have sent before.
Let's write an answer without fail.
Since we do not live here in this world twice,
let's do what we can to anyone
nearest to us, first of all.
Even if we are poor,
let's be close to them with all our hearts.
Since we do not live here in this world twice,
let's stop to look carefully at dewdrops
on leaves of dayflowers,
thinking deeply of the wonders of the encounter.
Since we do not live here in this world twice,
let's feel refreshed, day after day,
by watching the sun rise and set,
as well as the moon
waxing to the full and waning to the new,
and by being touched with
a variety of stars appearing
in different forms dependent on seasons,
far and broad in the sky.
Since we do not live here in this world twice,
let's strive to make our dream come true
that war will not break out among all of us.
I will compose as many poems of this sort, as I can,
always with spirit of composing just one more piece
of such a poem in mind.
After my death,
the young will follow my way of thinking.
For those people
I will keep on composing such poems
to make our great dream come into reality.
あとがき （『鳥は飛ばねばならぬ』から）
命を持っているものは、みな光をもとめているが、光というものは、
そうやすやすとやってくるものではない。いろいろの縁が重なり合って、
光のある処に出してもらえるのである。そういうことを年をとるにつれ、
しみじみと体解体得（たいげたいとく）するようになった。
この英訳本の詩集も世に出るまでには、目に見えない尊い霊の
お守りお導きがあり、それが実を結んで、
今日こうしてみなさんの目に触れるようになったのである。
編集、斡旋、交渉すべて「朴の会」の片山克さん(社長)、
小原靖夫さん（税理士）、常深信彦さん（教授）が、
それぞれ激務多忙の中で心をこめて取り組んでいただいた。
本の形式をととのえるまでに相当の月日を要し、
特に和英対照なので配列等の苦心も大変だったと思う。
詩の選出は、ぱるす出版の地主浩侍さま、春日栄さまが担当され、
わたしは一切タッチしなかったのであるが、
わたしの好きな詩が選ばれており、その詩眼に感謝した。
翻訳は、縁あって坂井孝彦先生にお願いした。
先生は心を込めて訳して下さり、英文の監修は
フランシス・フォード先生にていねいにごらんいただいた。
東洋の詩人の心を、一人でも多く理解して下さる方があれば、
詩一筋に生きてきたわたしの何よりの喜びである。
わたしはかつて詩集『アジアの路地』を出した時、
英訳して下さる方があったが、これは光を与えられずに終わったので、
今度のこの詩集は、どうか多くの人の手に支えられ握られ、
愛読されるようになって貰いたいと念ずるのである。
わたしは毎暁、近くの重信川の長い橋を、もう二十年以上渡り、
彼岸の川原で祈っている。橋というものは此岸と彼岸の二つを
結ぶものであるから、この詩集が地球上の各国の人々の
心の通い橋になってくれたらと思ったりして、
世に出る日の喜びを誰よりも待つのである。

Epilogue
Every living being, without exception, looks for light.
The light, however, does not come to shine on everyone very
easily.
A variety of fortunes, one upon another piled up,
bring someone into the light. I have come to deeply realize
and comprehend this sort of enlightenment with advancing years.
This collection of my poems, with English versions included
this time, must also have been under guidance and leadership
of holy guardian angels, unseen to us, until this day when
it has been finally brought into the light. Now, it has borne
its new fruit before you as you see.
Compilation, mediation, negotiation and anything else
all necessary to publish this book, have been carried out
by Mr. Masaru Katayama, in charge of "Magnolia (hypoleuca)
Circles",
the President of a company and Mr. Yasuo Ohara
(Certified Tax Accountant), and Professor Nobuhiko Tsunehuka.
Their devotion with all their heart has been very helpful,
even though they were in a whirl of business of their own.
It took a fairly long time to come to determine the format of
the book Each of my poems in Japanese is followed by
its English version in this book. This means each person
involved must have made strenuous efforts about
the arrangement and order of the book.
Which poems to adopt in this anthology has been done
by President Khoji Jinushi and Ms. Sakae Kasuga of
"Pulse Publishing, Co. Ltd." I was not involved in
this matter.
Then, I found my favorite poems were selected.
I really appreciate their keen and clear insight into my poetry.
By the irony of fate, I asked Professor Takahiko Sakai to make
the English versions. He has translated my poems into English
with all his heart. Ms. Frances Ford has kindly looked over
the English manuscript as a revisor. It would be appreciated
if even only one more person comprehends, through the English
versions as well, what an oriental poet possesses
in his heart and mind. Then, it would give me far greater
delight than anything else, for I have been living only as a
poet.
I once published an anthology called "Alleyways in Asia".
The poems in the works were translated into English
by a certain acquaintance. The English versions, however,
were not brought into the light at that time.
Thus, I now pray the new anthology this time will be supported
by many people, taken hold of in their hands, and favorably
recited with joy.
I cross the Shigenobu River every morning before dawn
over a long bridge near my home. Now I have been crossing
the bridge and giving my prayers on the other shore
of the river for more than twenty years. The bridge links
one side of the river with the other side. I hope this anthology
will, in the same manner as the bridge above, become
a spiritual bridge linking people with each other from
every nation all over the world. I am more impatient
than anybody else to see the new collection of my poems
come out into the world. In high glee, I wait.

「生きる力」を与えつづけて （『鳥は飛ばねばならぬ』から）
平成3年坂村真民先生は、第25回仏教伝道文化賞を受賞されました。
『詩国』の愛読者の一人として、心からお喜び申し上げます。
一遍上人の抱かれた悲願、六十万人決定往生の賦算が、
志半ばに終ったことを知られた真民先生が、
その後を受け継ごうと念じて始められた詩誌『詩国』が
昭和37年の発刊から1回も休むことなく32年間続けられ、
平成5年4月で370号に達するところとなりました。
真民先生ご自身によって宛名書きされた毎月1200通の『詩国』を、
一遍上人の賦算された数に加えますと、その願いでありました
60万人を遥かに越え、さらに多くの人々に伝わっております。
真民先生が、念誦される「念ずれば花ひらく」のお言葉に
感動した方々の手によって、各地に詩碑が建てられ、
その数は240余基となりました。「二度とない人生だから」
に始まる詩碑を加えますと、真民碑は280基近くにもなると聞き及びます。
清澄な詩境から生まれる真民先生の詩は、難しいことを易しく、
易しいことは深く掘り下げられ、人々を感動の世界に導き、
勇気づけておられます。知識や学歴がなくとも、
みずからの人生に真剣に取り組んでいる人達の心の支えとなり、
汗をかいている人には労りを、悲しみや苦しみを抱いている人には、
心を柔らげる力を与えてくださるのです。私は「念ずれば花ひらく」の
真実の言葉に出逢いました時、求めてきたものはこれだったのか
という感動が、新しい血を注ぎ込むように身体の中を駆けめぐる
のを感じました。富に恵まれていても荒んだ心では幸せになれず、
悲しみや苦しみを抱きつつも平和な人生がおくれる、
ということをタンポポ堂から説いてくださる真民先生が、
いつまでもお元気で活躍されますように、心からお祈り申し上げます。

A Hearty Supporter Giving Us "the Strength to Continue
to Live"
In 1991 Mr. Sakamura became the 25th winner of the Prize
of Evangelical and Cultural Work for Buddhism.
As one of the readers of "Shikoku", a monthly poetical
bulletin
written and compiled by him, I would like to offer
my hearty congratulation to him.
Saint Ippen aspired for 600,000 people to be protected
from evil and led to righteousness with an amulet by him,
which said, "Save us, merciful Buddha", but he ended
up
his life with his earnest wish only half-done.
Knowing this fact, Mr. Sakamura, determined to take over
for him, began to publish the "Shikoku", invoking the
aid of
Amida.
The bulletin, first published in 1962, and without any suspension
of its issue since then now enjoys its thirty-two years
of history and is going to publish the 370th issue in April,
1993.
Mr. Sakamura, by himself, has been addressing and
mailing the "Shikoku" to 1,200 people every month.
The number so far reached by him, added to that attained
by Saint Ippen, is now well over 600,000, the count earnestly
aspired by the saint. The number is increasing through propagation
to many other people. "Pray, and any flower of yours will
come
out."
―This poem is what Mr. Sakamura recites often in prayers.
Those who have been moved by the words began to put up
monuments of the poem, the words engraved on them,
across the country. The monuments now number more than 240.
The number of "Shinmin Monument" has now reached
nearly 280 in total, inclusive of the one on which
another famous poem―"Since We Live Once"―is engraved.
This is what I have heard.
His poems seem to come from his limpid poetic state of mind.
He sees "the difficult" as "the easy" and
probes deeply into
"the easy".
Thus, he leads us to a profound world of deep emotion and
encouragement. He is a hearty supporter for those
who wrestle with their life seriously even if they are people
with little knowledge or formal schooling. He is generous enough
to be considerate of those who earn their bread by the sweat
of their brow. He is also kind enough to give a pain-relieving
strength to those who bear the burden of sorrow and suffering.
When I happened to meet these words of truth: "Pray, and
any
flower of yours will come out," I realized these words were
what I had sought. I felt a deep emotion run throughout my body
as if it poured fresh blood into my life. Even if you are blessed
with wealth you cannot become happy without a mind in peace.
Even if you are filled with sorrow and suffering you can still
live
a life of peace. These are what Mr. Sakamura preaches about,
far away at "Dandelion Hall" in Shikoku Island. I devoutly
pray
that he will keep playing an active part, in good health from
now onward, too.
