● 和英翻訳練習帖（２）『二十一世紀に生きる君たちへ（司馬遼太郎著）』
吉田光江さん（横浜市、金曜クラブ）からご提言をいただいて
司馬遼太郎の『二十一世紀に生きる君たちへ』の和英翻訳をしました。
和英翻訳を終えてしばらくたってから、
実はこの本はすでに翻訳出版されていることがわかりました。
「ロバート・ミンツァー氏訳 / ドナルド・キーン監訳」（Ｄ訳）の翻訳でした。
そこで、この名訳と坂井の拙訳（Ｓ訳）をおそれながら恥をさらして比較させていただき、
和英翻訳練習帖とさせていただきたくお願いいたします。
私には、幸い、この世にたくさんのすばらしい友人がいる。
歴史の中にもいる。
（S訳）Fortunately I have lots of wonderful friends of mine
not only in this life but also in my favorite history.
⇔（D訳）I am lucky in having many wonderful friends
in this world. I have some in history too.
そこには、この世では求めがたいほどにすばらしい人たちがいて、
私の日常を、はげましたり、なぐさめたりしてくれているのである。
（S訳）In the latter, I could encounter terrifically attractive
historical figures who are「unobtainable→rare」
「in the land of the living→in the present world」.
They are generous enough to encourage me to get cheered up
in my daily life.

people it would be hard to find in this world,
and they encourage me and comfort me
in my daily life.

だから、私は少なくとも二千年以上の時間の中を、
生きているようなものだと思っている。
（S訳）This is why I feel as if I led a happy life
in the course of the time
