「粗末な小屋に、ランプの灯りが、きらきら見える」

In the window it's shining for me,
「あのランプ、あんなに輝いて」

and I know that my mother is praying for the boy she is longing to see.
「わかるよ、母さん、会いたいんだ俺に。だから、お祈りしてるんだ。」

When it's lamp-lighting time in the valley,then in dreams I go back to my home.
「谷間で　ランプの灯がともるたそがれどき、夢うつつだよ、ふるさとの家にいるみたいな気分になるよ」

I can see that old lamp in the window.
「窓ぎわのあのランプ、なつかしいなあ」

あとがき

・萩原文彦先生（横浜時事英語クラブ主宰、2003年11月、95歳）は、昭和8年、東京大学英文科を卒業されてすぐ長野県の飯田高等女学校へ赴任されたそうです。

　そこで、学生たちに「谷間に灯ともし頃（谷間の灯）」を教えられたそうです。

　ほぼ七十年後の同窓会では、その生徒たちとともにまたこの歌を歌われた、と愉しそうに話されました。

　この歌の歌詞の二番と三番については、訳詞者の西原武三さんも、その訳詞をつくるのを断念されてしまったのかもしれません。
　いくつかの歌の本をみてみましたが、この部分の訳詞は「なつかしの母の待つ　ふるさとの母」とあるのみで、これ以外の訳詞は見当たりません。

「想い出のグリーングラス」の歌の場合もそうですが、この種の非情な内容や悲劇的な内容を含む英語歌詞の部分は、訳詞の世界ではどうも和訳されてこなかった、という経緯があるようです。
