● The Arrow and the Song
I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

● 矢と歌 （訳詞：秋山平吾）
大空に放ちたる矢は
地に落ちていずこにゆきし、
疾（と）く飛び去りて
眼もて追うをえざれば。
大空にうたえる歌は
地に落ちていずこへゆきし、
誰（た）がその調べ
めざとくも追うをえん。
幾月日ながれ去り
見出（みいで）たり樫の木に
もとのままなるかの一矢
始めより終わりまで
友の心にかの歌を。

1. into the air = into the sky.
2. to earth = to the earth.
3. I knew not where = somewhere I did not know.
4. the sight could not follow it in its flight.
= that the sight could not follow its flight.
5. breathed = sang; whispered.
6. unbroke =unbroken.

私は空へ矢を放った、
矢の落ちた場所はどこだか分からない。
あまりに速く飛びすぎて、
目で追うことが出来なかったので。
私は空へ歌を放った、
歌の落ちた場所はどこだか分からない。
歌の行方が分かるほど
鋭く強い眼を持つ人はいないので。
それからずっと後になって、
樫の木に折れずに刺さった矢が見つかった。
そして、私のあの歌が、初めから終わりまで、
友の心にまた見つかった。
