since you left the coast of your hometown?
２ 旧（もと）の樹は 生（お）いや茂れる
枝はなお 影をやなせる
Is your mother tree still growing thick and rank?
Are its branches and palms still casting a shadow?
われもまた 渚（なぎさ）を枕
ひとり身の 浮寝（うきね）の旅ぞ
Just like you, I'll now lie down on the beach.
All alone now on a journey,
I'll sleep here like a floating waterfowl.
3 実をとりて 胸にあつれば
Taking the driftage in my hands and putting it against
my heart
新たなり 流離（りゅうり）の憂い
refreshes my heart-breaking grief
in a remote country where I'm wandering now.
海の日の 沈むを見れば
The sight of a sunset on the sea
たぎり落つ 異郷（いきょう）の涙
makes nostalgic tears well up and course down my cheeks.
思いやる 八重の汐々（しおじお）
いずれの日にか 国にかえらん
I can easily imagine my hometown far away over a vast ocean.
I'll come back to my old home some day in future.
