When I am not Watchful,
Mother Gives a Warning to Me



"Be vigilant."
This is what Mother has left as her will to me.

When I recognize that I have behaved like a spoilt child,
I unintentionally recall Mother in the face.

"Be alert."
This phrase has reformed me.
In my mind Mother still gives a warning to me.

（考察）
・秋の夕日に　照る山紅葉

両方の英訳に、gleamingが見える。
この語がキーワード。
「照る」をさらに強調して、
Greg Irwin訳にはbrightが、
中野訳ではfieryが使われている。


・濃いも薄いも　数ある中に
Leaves of all colors drifting
Filling the forest with delight
/Dark and light in autumn tide,
Leaves of all colors対Dark and lightの妙。

drifting, filling the forest with delightも
素敵な訳補になっている。

同拍数の中で、
英語の方が日本語に比べて多くの情報を入れることができそうだ、
ということがこの場面でも納得できる。


・松をいろどる　楓（かえで）や蔦（つた）は
Whispering pines will stay green

/Red and yellow maples, and evergreens so tall,

「いろどる」：ご両人とも色の対照性に着目して英訳化。

Greg Irwin訳では
「stay不変の色」と「turn変化する色」を対照させている。

中野訳では「常緑色」と「（変化した）紅黄色」とを対照させている。

中山靖雄先生ご勇退からそろそろ一年がたちます。
ご指導賜りながら英訳しました風林火山を
再掲させていただきたくお願いいたします：


風林火山

雲峰寺 (孫子の旗)

馬が走る　人が急ぐ
ざわめきの息の中　甲冑の音
疲れきった体に
膝が抜けるような石段
待ち構える仁王像
命を　命を
旗を　旗を

葉擦れの音　清やかに
木漏れ日　和わらかに
暫しの安息
遠くより聞こえる
小烏の囀りに何者にも恐れないものを
心に吹き込まれたかの様に
「うむ」・・・・・・と
戦士は立ち上がり
石段をゆっくり
降りて行く
苔むした　羅漢仏は
足元に静かにこうべを垂れて背後には
山門の仁王像が黙然と
過去　現在　未来　すべてを
飲み込む



風林火山

風林火山　＝　戦国大名武田氏の軍旗のひとつに書かれた
「疾如風、除如林、侵掠如火、不動如山」の略。また、その軍旗の通称。

・疾如風　＝　速きこと風の如し（迅速な軍隊行動）
・除如林　＝　静かなること林の如し（隠密なる情報収集伝達）
・侵掠如火＝　侵略すること火の如し（臨機応変な作戦・組織的行動）
・不動如山＝　動かざること山の如し（持久戦、防衛堅持）


雲峰寺 (孫子の旗)
[大菩薩嶺登山口にある。
代々武田家の祈願所として敬われた。
本堂・仁王門など、
建造物のほとんどが
国の重要文化財である。

ここの宝物館には
武田家の家宝
「日の丸の御旗」、
「風林火山旗」などがある。
武田家の軍旗として名高い
「風林火山旗」上に書かれている文言は、
中国古代（春秋時代）の「呉」という国に
仕えていた軍略家の孫武の著した
『孫子』（もっとも古い兵法書）からとったものである。

「風林火山旗」＝「孫子の旗」。]


『孫子』の一節：

兵は詐（さ）をもって立ち、
利をもって動き、
分合（ぶんごう）をもって変をなす者なり。
其の疾（はや）きことは風のごとく、
その除（しず）かなることは林のごとく、
侵掠（しんりゃく）することは火のごとく、
動かざることは山のごとく、
知りがたきことは陰（かげ）のごとく、
動くことは雷の震うがごとく、
郷を掠（かす）むるには衆を分ち、
地を廓（ひろ）むるには利を分ち、
権をかけて動く、
先（ま）ず迂直（うちょく）の計を知る者は勝つ、
此（こ）れ軍争の法なり。

・whirlwinds: Take action swiftly like a whirlwind.
・Forests: Collect intelligence on the quiet as seen in forests.
・Flames: Organize the forces to burst into flames.
・Mountains: Even in a protracted struggle, keep as dignified as mountains.

Umpoji-temple in Yamanashi Prefecture
　has preserved the regimental colors [the battle flag] of Takeda’s family
　and followers for centuries.
The flag is called SONSHI-NO-HATA
　or the colors of Sun Tzu,
　a tactician in ancient China.

　to face the two Deva kings
　that have been waiting for them.

木漏（こも）れ日　和（や）わらかに
暫（しば）しの安息（あんそく）
    With leaves whispering, rustling with bracing breezes,
        with sunbeams gently shining through branches of the trees,
        they take a rest there for a while.

遠くより聞こえる
小烏の囀（さえず）りに何者にも恐れないものを
心に吹き込まれたかの様に
     From far away, they hear birds chirping and twittering.
     The songs now seems to have inspired them with a fighting spirit
　　　　that stands firm in defiance of any enemy.

「うむ」・・・・・・と
戦士は立ち上がり
石段をゆっくり
降りて行く
    They say to themselves, “So here goes,”
　　　and stand up on their feet
　　　to go slowly down the stone steps.

苔むした　羅漢仏（らかんぼとけ）は
足元に静かにこうべを垂れて背後には
山門の仁王像が黙然（もくぜん）と
過去　現在　未来　すべてを
飲み込む
     At their feet along the way to down there stands
　　　a Buddhist image called Rakan-botoke,
　　　mossed by time, with his head down calmly.
(五百羅漢 = the five hundred Buddha’s disciples who attained Nirvana)
     At their back there stand
　　　the guardian gods of the temple gate silent.
     The two Deva kings seem to have a good grip on the situation
　　　in the past, present, and future.
