Greg Irwin訳は、
「うさぎ追いし」をrabbits ran
wildとして、
いわば西欧的な合理性・論理性のようなものを
基盤とした訳出をしている。
また、
この歌の「山は青き」「水は清き」の部分では、
青さ、清らかさの言外に込めた美しさを面にとり出して、
“Shining
like an emerald stone”,
“crystal
waters”
というような具体的表現をしている。
これは、たぶん、
英語圏の人々に対する
「わかりやすさ」を
配慮したためであるように考えられる。
「故郷（ふるさと）」の歌は、
Greg
Irwinさんに
ご自分の故郷であるウィスコンシン州を
懐かしく思い出させたようだ。
Greg
Irwinさんの柔らかな声の
「英語の歌」を通して
故郷への想いがひしひしと伝わってくる。
米国でもアイルランドの公演でも
「この歌を歌ったとき、皆、同じところで涙した」
と言われる。

● 「明魂」の英訳
中山靖雄先生（修養団）が
ご勇退されて
ほぼ一年が経過しつつあります。
ご指導賜りながら英訳しました
「明魂」を再掲させていただきたくお願いいたします。
明魂
月歪むにあらず波騒ぐなり。
止水に映る月を見よ。
波立つ心に映る萬象は真の相を現わさず。
日暗むにあらず雲かかるなり。
雲去ればまた輝く。
暗き魂を通して眺むる世界は暗黒なり。
静かなる、心には、一木一草も仏の姿を現わし、
明るき魂には、行雲流水も神の妙工を啓示すなり。
悟れる者の生涯には、
怨もなく呪もなく、
すべてを感謝し常に喜び絶えず祈る。
花は情なく開けども、
月は心なく照らせども、
涙に仰げば月も泣き、
笑いて見れば花も微笑む。
迷える者よ。
父を怨むな兄を呪うな、
妻を責むるな子を罵るな。
人を審判く眼を転じておのが魂を凝視めよ。

Since the time I realized
that I was also a God-given child,
I have come to reveal myself
unceasingly filled with joy.
Reveal Yourself with Your Soul
Purified

・脚下照顧
はきものをそろえると心もそろう
Arranging our shoes neatly, we bring harmony to our
minds.
心がそろうと はきものもそろう
When our minds are harmonious, we arrange shoes
neatly.
ぬぐときに そろえておくと
If we arrange shoes neatly when we take them
off,
はくときに 心がみだれない
Our minds won’t be disturbed when we put them
on.
だれかが みだしておいたら
If someone leaves shoes in
disarray,
だまって そろえておいてあげよう
Let us silently set them in
order.
そうすればきっと 世界中の人の心も
Such an act surely will bring
harmony
そろうでしょう
To the minds of people around the
world.

● あとがき Postscript
「明魂」は，
蓮沼門三『道のひかり』の第一章の文章です。
『道のひかり』は十章からなり，
ここに修養団創立者蓮沼門三先生が
語り記してこられた多くのことが
独特の文体で凝縮されています。
これは修養団の教典となっております。
中山靖雄先生・緑様ご夫妻から
ご恵贈いただいた
〈山口彰『人生成功のバイブル 人間愛の巨人・蓮沼門三の哲学』
（ＰＨＰ，2005）〉の253頁に
現代語訳が掲載されていました：

誰にも本来，
美しい真心が（明魂）がある。
だが，
精神が乱れると，
その真心も乱れたように映り，
精神が曇ると，
真心は雲に覆われてしまう。
しかし，
乱れをとり去り
暗雲を払えば，
本来の美しい心が輝いて，
すべてが新鮮ですばらしく見える。
怨みや呪いは
暗雲に覆われた
自分の心から生まれる。
人を責め裁く目を自分に転じ，
深く反省していくと，
暗雲が晴れて，
人間の美しい本性（明魂）が現れる。
さらに，
愛と汗の精神を発揮して
人のために尽くしていくと，
悟れる人の生き方，
すなわち，
すべてに感謝し，

つぎのような英訳をみつけることができました。
こんな感じでいかがでしょうか：
（引用はじめ）
「足ることを知れ」
＝人間の欲望は限りがないものであるから、
分相応のところで満足するところを知らなければ
ならない。
Let
every man be content with his own
lot.
（ひとは皆自分の運命に満足するがよい）

※
この説明のニュアンスは、
「運命にさからわないで
あたえられているものに不平をいわずに
感謝しなさい」
といったところでしょうか。
「運命」という訳語が強くひびきますので、
「めぐりあわせ」くらいに変更してみますと
大竹さんのいわれる「ああよかった」という
感覚が、あるいは、私流に別言しますと
「これでいいんだよ」という感覚が、
すこしわきでてくるようにもおもいます。
英訳も和訳もピタリとはいかないもんですね。
和英翻訳にとりかかる前に
「和和翻訳」的な考察・思考・調査の段階があって
ここでの成果が和文英訳における「勝負みたいなもの」
をきめるような気がしています。
わたしは、この段階を「ほぐす」という風に
呼んでいます。

にも、つぎのような「ことわざ」をみつけました：
A contended mind is a continual
feast.
contentは通例「欠乏・不足部分を補って人が不平を
言わない程度に満足させる」の意をふくむようですので、
上記の
a contended mind は、もしかしましたら、
「足るを知るこころ」に近い意味になるような気がします。
後半の a continual
feast
は
「何度も何度も、繰り返しいただけるごちそう
（みたいなもの）」
の様な感じで和文化してみるといいのでしょうか。
上記のことわざ辞典では、このことわざを
下記のようにパラフレーズしています：
Those
who are satisfied with their lot
in life are far happier than those who
are
constantly striving for something
better.
あえて和訳してみますと：
（人生行路で出逢うめぐりあわせに
これでいいんだと満足感をおぼえている人と、
もっといいことはないものかと
絶えずがつがつともがいている人と、
この二人をくらべてみますと、
足るを知っている人のほうが
