アメリカの国歌
アメリカの国歌ではどんなことが歌われているのだろうか。
メロディーのほうはよく耳にする。しかし、歌詞の内容のほ
うはあまり知られていないようだ。1814年の英米戦争のとき、
マックヘンリの要塞にはためく星条旗をみて、弁護士のキイ
が作詞した歌である、ということである。この歌詞をみると、
アメリカの人々の自由を希求する気持ちがひしひしと伝わっ
てくるように、感じられる。二番の歌詞はその内容が今の時
代にややふさわしくないのか、あまり歌われないようだ。
私の手元にある資料
( 「世界の名歌」 東京:野ばら社,
1956)
には、和訳は掲載されていない。このアメリカ国歌の英語歌
詞はいろいろなところでみかけるけれども、その和訳がつい
ていない場合が多いようである。難しそうな歌詞のように見
えるからであろうか。一番から三番までを通して全文の和訳
文を作ってみた：

勇者の故郷の天高くに/ （和訳：坂井孝彦）
1931年3月フーバー大統領によって国歌として正式に採用
された、という。独立前のアメリカでは、イギリス国歌の"God
Save
the King"が歌われ、アメリカ合衆国成立後もこの曲が、
引き続き使われた、という。
19世紀初頭のアメリカは、自由平等をこの地上に実現する
のだとの固い信念のもと、世界一をめざす若い国であったよ
うである。とりわけ、国家としての団結統合が求められた時
代であったようである。この歌詞は勇壮な祖国愛、郷土愛に
満ちている。
この歌の一番については、つぎのようないくつかの和訳を
みつけることができた。これらの和訳のなかには
もしかしたら若干の誤訳？かもしれない、と思われる
ものも散見された。

Irwin訳では、「あした」はtomorrowという語に転換されている。もし、意
図的な創作訳ではないとすれば、ここでの「あした」は、日本語にかなり堪能
な「英語圏からの人」にとっても難しい部類に属することばの使い方であった
のかもしれない。
・風の音よ 雲の さま よ
I listen to the wind you

Irwin訳：「雲のさま」をwatch the clouds roll over meとした英訳詞は、動
きが感じられる訳詞である。動いていく「様態」をじっと見つめている、とい
う感じが巧みに表現されている。
中野訳：「風の音」the

windも「巧みな」英訳である。
Osborn訳は、元の日本語歌詞内容をほぼ無視して、

のように、音声と色彩を取り入れた改訳ないしは創作訳として印象派的な雰囲
気を醸成している。

「かいの色」：櫂にあたる英語はどの訳者の英語歌詞においても表現されてい
ない。たいていの日本人ならば多分、「櫂」という日本語によって、浜辺に見え
る小舟とその櫂を想起できる。さらにその櫂はもう古びた色をしていて昔を偲
ぶ「よすが」のひとつとなっている，という想いを抱くことも多分容易なこと
である。英語圏のひとびとは，この「櫂」ということばにどんな想いをいだく
のであろうか。American
Heritage DictionaryはA long thin, usually
wooden pole with a blade at one end,
used to row or steer a board
と説明している。
この定義からでは，英語圏の人々が「櫂」に抱く情感的・情緒的な奥義を汲み取
ることはできない。

yesterdayというように転換している。
意図的な改訳でなければ，多分，誤訳である。

中野訳：the
foaming waves that
breakは「たくみな訳詞」である。
Osborn訳：状況をうまく切り取っている訳詞で、lappingによって波の音感
をかもしだしている。
Osborn訳は，全体的には、朝・夕の浜辺の雰囲気を理屈と情感をないまぜに
して、巧みな創作訳ともいえそうな英文化を図っている。しみじみとした情感
に溢れ，絶唱といえるほどの出来栄えのようにも感じられる。Osborn自身が原
作詞者の描く状況・雰囲気のなかに浸りきっている。一体化して原作者の心境・
心情を英語文化圏に通じる形でかなり大胆に自由に英訳文のなかに彷彿させて
いるように思われる。受け手志向の感性に訴える印象画風の創作詞・創造詞訳
と言ってもよいかもしれない。意味的な等価性は希薄であるが，原作詞者の心
情・心境を充分に移しかえしており，
広義のfunctional

と言える。
