Heaven's Decree

What is Heaven's decree?
Whatever kind of difficulties or hardships
you may be involved in,
you are ordained
to steadily walk step by step,
with a straight back,
along the highway.
If you realize this a heavenly gift,
then you will come to be honest with yourself,
and then,
for the first time in your life,
you will notice Heaven's decree bestowed.

　　あれ鈴虫も鳴き出した
      Oh, bell-crickets joined tonight,
      How sweetly they sing,

      Rin-rin-rin-rin-reen-ring
　　あきの夜長を鳴き通す
      Charming is the chorus, how they sound tonight
　　ああ　おもしろい虫のこえ
      How I love concerts through the autumn night!

２．キリキリキリキリ　きりぎりす
      Kiri-kiri, kiri-kiri, grasshoppers,
      They sing all the night.
　　ガチャ　ガチャ　ガチャ　
　　ガチャ　くつわ虫
　　あとから馬おい　おいついて
　　チョンチョン　チョンチョン
　　スイッチョン
      Gacha-gacha, gacha-gacha, who are they?
      Many players joined tonight,
      How joyfully they play,
      Chon-chon, chon-chon, soo-it-chong,
    秋の夜長を鳴き通す
      Charming is the insect’s band, how they play so bright,

      How I love music through the moonlit night!


（考察）
ガチャガチャ、キリキリなどの擬音語の英訳、
むつかしいですね。
擬音語・擬態語の英訳をさがしています。

それから、虫の声なんて
英米人にとっては雑音にすぎない、
というお方もおられたりするのですが。
もっとも一律にそうではなくて
虫の声に風情を感じられている
英米人の記述もあるんですよね。

ご高名な生物学者、環境学者の
著作にもその例をみつけました。

Rachel Carson (1956: 90-91)―
・the insects that play little fiddles in the grass...
・the sound of the insect orchestra swells and throbs night after night...
・a bush from which comes a sweet, high-pitched, endlessly repeated trill...
・from somewhere comes a cheerful, rhythmic chirping, a sound as
 　companionable and homely as a fire crackling on a hearth or a cat's purr...

This is a day of national consecration, and I am certain that on this day,
my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the presidency I will
address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our

conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has
endured. We will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my

 Insight

 If my mind's modest,
 I walk the great way.
 Arrogance
 is all I fear.
 The great way is low and plain,
 but people like shortcuts over the mountains.

 The palace is full of  splendor
 and the fields are full of weeds
 and the granaries are full of nothing.

 People wearing ornaments and fancy clothes,
 carrying weapons,
 drinking a lot and eating a lot,
 having a lot of things, a lot of money:
 shameless thieves.
 Surely their way
 isn't the way.

私の手元には三種類の英訳書があります。
それぞれの訳詩に文体上の個性が感じられます。
上記の英訳が三種類のなかでは私にはもっとも現代英語風の訳詩のように思えました。
